وَيَقُولُونَ لَوْلَا أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ آيَةٌ مِنْ رَبِّهِ ۖ فَقُلْ إِنَّمَا الْغَيْبُ لِلَّهِ فَانْتَظِرُوا إِنِّي مَعَكُمْ مِنَ الْمُنْتَظِرِينَ
Wayaqooloona lawla onzila AAalayhi ayatun min rabbihi faqul innama alghaybu lillahi faintathiroo innee maAAakum mina almuntathireena (20)
( ويقولون ) يعني : أهل مكة ، ( لولا أنزل عليه ) أي : على محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم ( آية من ربه ) على ما نقترحه ، ( فقل إنما الغيب لله ) يعني : قل إنما سألتموني الغيب وإنما الغيب لله ، لا يعلم أحد لم لم يفعل ذلك ولا يعلمه إلا هو . وقيل : الغيب نزول الآية لا يعلم متى ينزل أحد غيره ، ( فانتظروا ) نزولها ( إني معكم من المنتظرين ) وقيل : فانتظروا قضاء الله بيننا بالحق بإظهار المحق على المبطل .
The idolaters ask why a sign is not sent to Muhammad from his Lord to prove the truth of what he says. Say to them O Messenger, 'The sending down of signs is Allah’s knowledge alone, so wait for the sign you ask for, as I am also waiting along with you for it.'
