ثُمَّ يَأْتِي مِنْ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ سَبْعٌ شِدَادٌ يَأْكُلْنَ مَا قَدَّمْتُمْ لَهُنَّ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا مِمَّا تُحْصِنُونَ
Thumma yatee min baAAdi thalika sabAAun shidadun yakulna ma qaddamtum lahunna illa qaleelan mimma tuhsinoona (48)
( ثم يأتي من بعد ذلك سبع شداد ) سمى السنين المجدبة شدادا لشدتها على الناس ( يأكلن ) أي : يفنين ويهلكن ( ما قدمتم لهن ) أي : يؤكل فيهن ما أعددتم لهن من الطعام ، أضاف الأكل إلى السنين على طريق التوسع ( إلا قليلا مما تحصنون ) تحرزون وتدخرون للبذر .
Then after these seven fertile years in which they successfully grew food, seven barren years would come, when the people would eat all they had harvested in the fertile years, except for a little of what they had stored, from which they would be able to sow seeds.
