بَلْ قَالُوا أَضْغَاثُ أَحْلَامٍ بَلِ افْتَرَاهُ بَلْ هُوَ شَاعِرٌ فَلْيَأْتِنَا بِآيَةٍ كَمَا أُرْسِلَ الْأَوَّلُونَ
Bal qaloo adghathu ahlamin bali iftarahu bal huwa shaAAirun falyatina biayatin kama orsila alawwaloona (5)
( بل قالوا أضغاث أحلام ) أباطيلها [ وأقاويلها ] وأهاويلها رآها في النوم ، ( بل افتراه ) اختلقه ، ( بل هو شاعر ) يعني أن المشركين اقتسموا القول فيه وفيما يقوله ، قال بعضهم : أضغاث أحلام ، وقال بعضهم : بل هو فرية ، وقال بعضهم : بل محمد شاعر وما جاءكم به شعر . ( فليأتنا ) محمد ( بآية ) إن كان صادقا ( كما أرسل الأولون ) من الرسل بالآيات . قال الله تعالى مجيبا لهم :
But they were unsure of what Muhammad (peace be upon him) brought. At times they said: “Confused dreams which have no meaning”. And at times they said: “No, but in fact he made it up without any basis”. And sometimes they said: “He is a magician. If he is true in his claim, he should bring us a miracle like the former messengers, as they brought miracles like the staff of Moses and the camel of Salih”.
