قَالُوا سُبْحَانَكَ مَا كَانَ يَنْبَغِي لَنَا أَنْ نَتَّخِذَ مِنْ دُونِكَ مِنْ أَوْلِيَاءَ وَلَٰكِنْ مَتَّعْتَهُمْ وَآبَاءَهُمْ حَتَّىٰ نَسُوا الذِّكْرَ وَكَانُوا قَوْمًا بُورًا
Qaloo subhanaka ma kana yanbaghee lana an nattakhitha min doonika min awliyaa walakin mattaAAtahum waabaahum hatta nasoo alththikra wakanoo qawman booran (18)
( قالوا سبحانك ) نزهوا الله من أن يكون معه إله ، ( ما كان ينبغي لنا أن نتخذ من دونك من أولياء ) يعني : ما كان ينبغي لنا أن نوالي أعداءك ، بل أنت ولينا من دونهم . وقيل : ما كان لنا أن نأمرهم بعبادتنا ونحن نعبدك . وقرأ أبو جعفر " أن نتخذ " بضم النون وفتح الخاء ، فتكون " من " الثاني صلة . ( ولكن متعتهم وآباءهم ) في الدنيا بطول العمر والصحة والنعمة ، ) ( حتى نسوا الذكر ) تركوا الموعظة والإيمان بالقرآن . وقيل : تركوا ذكرك وغفلوا عنه ، ( وكانوا قوما بورا ) يعني هلكى غلب عليهم الشقاء والخذلان ، رجل يقال له بائر ، وقوم بور ، وأصله من البوار وهو الكساد والفساد ، ومنه بوار السلعة وهو كسادها . وقيل هو اسم مصدر كالزور ، يستوي فيه الواحد والاثنان والجمع والمذكر والمؤنث .
The worshipped ones will say, “Our Lord! You are exalted from having any partner. It was not for us to take any guardians instead of You, so how could we call Your servants to worship us instead of You? Our Lord! Rather, You granted these idolaters and their forefathers enjoyment through the pleasures of the world, gradually leading them into their destruction, until they forgot Your remembrance and worshipped others with You. They were people doomed due to their wretchedness.”
