وَكَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا مِنْ قَرْيَةٍ بَطِرَتْ مَعِيشَتَهَا ۖ فَتِلْكَ مَسَاكِنُهُمْ لَمْ تُسْكَنْ مِنْ بَعْدِهِمْ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا ۖ وَكُنَّا نَحْنُ الْوَارِثِينَ
Wakam ahlakna min qaryatin batirat maAAeeshataha fatilka masakinuhum lam tuskan min baAAdihim illa qaleelan wakunna nahnu alwaritheena (58)
قوله - عز وجل - : ( وكم أهلكنا من قرية ) أي من أهل قرية ، ( بطرت معيشتها ) أي : في معيشتها ، أي : أشرت وطغت ، قال عطاء : عاشوا في البطر فأكلوا رزق الله وعبدوا الأصنام ، ( فتلك مساكنهم لم تسكن من بعدهم إلا قليلا ) قال ابن عباس - رضي الله عنهما - : لم يسكنها إلا المسافرون ومار الطريق يوما أو ساعة ، معناه : لم تسكن من بعدهم إلا سكونا قليلا . وقيل : معناه : لم يعمر منها إلا أقلها وأكثرها خراب ، ( وكنا نحن ، الوارثين ) " إنا نحن نرث الأرض ومن عليها " ( مريم - 40 ) .
And how many a city were there which were ungrateful for Allah’s blessings on them, then they exceeded the bounds in sins and disobedience, so I sent a punishment to them and destroyed them through it. So these are their dwellings in ruins, with people passing by them. They were not inhabited after those who lived in them, except for a few travellers. And it is I who will inherit the heavens, the earth and everyone in them.
