فَإِذَا مَسَّ الْإِنْسَانَ ضُرٌّ دَعَانَا ثُمَّ إِذَا خَوَّلْنَاهُ نِعْمَةً مِنَّا قَالَ إِنَّمَا أُوتِيتُهُ عَلَىٰ عِلْمٍ ۚ بَلْ هِيَ فِتْنَةٌ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
Faitha massa alinsana durrun daAAana thumma itha khawwalnahu niAAmatan minna qala innama ooteetuhu AAala AAilmin bal hiya fitnatun walakinna aktharahum la yaAAlamoona (49)
( فإذا مس الإنسان ضر ) شدة ، ( دعانا ثم إذا خولناه ) أعطيناه ( نعمة منا قال إنما أوتيته على علم ) أي : على علم من الله أني له أهل . وقال مقاتل : على خير علمه الله عندي ، وذكر الكناية لأن المراد من النعمة الإنعام . ( بل هي فتنة ) يعني : تلك النعمة فتنة استدراج من الله تعالى وامتحان وبلية . وقيل : بل كلمته التي قالها فتنة . ( ولكن أكثرهم لا يعلمون ) أنه استدراج وامتحان .
When a disbelieving man is afflicted by sickness, poverty etc. he calls out to Me to remove his affliction. Then when I bless him with health or wealth, the disbeliever says: Allah has only given me this because He knows that I deserve it. Actually it is a test and a means of luring him to his destruction. But most disbelievers do not know this and they are deceived by the blessings Allah gives them.
