وَإِنْ كَانَ كَبُرَ عَلَيْكَ إِعْرَاضُهُمْ فَإِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ تَبْتَغِيَ نَفَقًا فِي الْأَرْضِ أَوْ سُلَّمًا فِي السَّمَاءِ فَتَأْتِيَهُمْ بِآيَةٍ ۚ وَلَوْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَجَمَعَهُمْ عَلَى الْهُدَىٰ ۚ فَلَا تَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْجَاهِلِينَ
Wain kana kabura AAalayka iAAraduhum faini istataAAta an tabtaghiya nafaqan fee alardi aw sullaman fee alssamai fatatiyahum biayatin walaw shaa Allahu lajamaAAahum AAala alhuda fala takoonanna mina aljahileena (35)
( وإن كان كبر عليك إعراضهم ) أي : عظم عليك وشق أن أعرضوا عن الإيمان بك ، وكان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يحرص على إيمان قومه أشد الحرص ، وكانوا إذ سألوا آية أحب أن يريهم الله تعالى ذلك طمعا في إيمانهم ، فقال الله عز وجل : ( فإن استطعت أن تبتغي نفقا ) تطلب وتتخد نفقا سربا ( وفي الأرض ) ومنه نافقاء اليربوع ، وهو أحد جحريه فيذهب فيه ، ( أو سلما ) أي : درجا ومصعدا ، ( في السماء ) فتصعد فيه ، ( فتأتيهم بآية ) فافعل ، ( ولو شاء الله لجمعهم على الهدى ) فآمنوا كلهم ، ( فلا تكونن من الجاهلين ) أي : بهذا الحرف ، وهو قوله : ( ولو شاء الله لجمعهم على الهدى ) وأن من يكفر لسابق علم الله فيه .
If their denial and turning away from the truth you have brought is difficult for you, O Messenger, then see if you can find a tunnel into the ground or a ladder into the sky so that you may bring them more proof in addition to what I have already given you. If Allah willed to guide them to the guidance that you brought, He would have done so. However, He has not willed this because of His wisdom. So do not be among those who are ignorant of this and lose yourself in regret over their denial.
