Surah Al-Balad (The City) سُورَة البلد

Surah Al-Balad is the 90th chapter of the Quran, consisting of 20 verses. It reflects on the challenges of life in this world and the importance of charity and righteousness in overcoming them. Below are the verses of this Surah.

Surah Al-Balad (The City) — سُورَةُ البلد

Also known as: Lā Uqsimu bi-Hādhā al-Balad (I Swear by This City)

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

لَا أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا الْبَلَدِ i

90:1

I swear by this city, Makkah - ⁽¹⁾

وَأَنْتَ حِلٌّ بِهَٰذَا الْبَلَدِ i

90:2

And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city - ⁽²⁾

وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ i

90:3

And [by] the father and that which was born [of him], ⁽³⁾

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنْسَانَ فِي كَبَدٍ i

90:4

We have certainly created man into hardship. ⁽⁴⁾

أَيَحْسَبُ أَنْ لَنْ يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ i

90:5

Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? ⁽⁵⁾

يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُبَدًا i

90:6

He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance." ⁽⁶⁾

أَيَحْسَبُ أَنْ لَمْ يَرَهُ أَحَدٌ i

90:7

Does he think that no one has seen him? ⁽⁷⁾

أَلَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَهُ عَيْنَيْنِ i

90:8

Have We not made for him two eyes? ⁽⁸⁾

وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ i

90:9

And a tongue and two lips? ⁽⁹⁾

وَهَدَيْنَاهُ النَّجْدَيْنِ i
