Surah Abasa (He Frowned) سُورَة عبس

Surah Abasa is the 80th chapter of the Quran, consisting of 42 verses. This Surah highlights the moment when the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) frowned at the sight of a blind man who sought guidance from him. Below are the verses of this Surah.

Surah Abasa (He frowned) — سُورَةُ عبس

Also known as: al-Safarah (The Scribes), al-Ṣākhkhah (The Deafening Blast), al-Aʿmā (The Blind Man)

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ ۞

i

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُ يَزَّكَّىٰ ٣ i

80:3

But what could tell thee but that perchance he might grow (in spiritual understanding)?- (3)

أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنْفَعَهُ الذِّكْرَىٰ ٤ i

80:4

Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him? (4)

وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ ٧ i

80:7

Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding). (7)

كَلَّا إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ ١١ i

80:11

By no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction: (11)

مِنْ نُطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُ فَقَدَّرَهُ ١٩ i

80:19

From a sperm-drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due proportions; (19)

ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُ فَأَقْبَرَهُ ٢١ i

80:21

Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; (21)

كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَا أَمَرَهُ ٢٣ i

80:23

By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him. (23)

فَلْيَنْظُرِ الْإِنْسَانُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِ ٢٤ i

80:24

Then let man look at his food, (and how We provide it): (24)

مَتَاعًا لَكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَامِكُمْ ٣٢ i

80:32

For use and convenience to you and your cattle. (32)

يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ الْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ ٣٤ i

80:34

That Day shall a man flee from his own brother, (34)

لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مِنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ ٣٧ i

80:37

Each one of them, that Day, will have enough concern (of his own) to make him indifferent to the others. (37)

وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ ٤٠ i

80:40

And other faces that Day will be dust-stained, (40)

أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْكَفَرَةُ الْفَجَرَةُ ٤٢ i

80:42

Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity. (42)
