Surah Al-Balad (The City) سُورَة البلد

Surah Al-Balad is the 90th chapter of the Quran, consisting of 20 verses. It reflects on the challenges of life in this world and the importance of charity and righteousness in overcoming them. Below are the verses of this Surah.

Surah Al-Balad (The City) — سُورَةُ البلد

Also known as: Lā Uqsimu bi-Hādhā al-Balad (I Swear by This City)

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ ۞

i

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنْسَانَ فِي كَبَدٍ ٤ i

90:4

Verily We have created man into toil and struggle. (4)

أَيَحْسَبُ أَنْ لَنْ يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ ٥ i

90:5

Thinketh he, that none hath power over him? (5)

يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُبَدًا ٦ i

90:6

He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance! (6)

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْعَقَبَةُ ١٢ i

90:12

And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?- (12)

أَوْ إِطْعَامٌ فِي يَوْمٍ ذِي مَسْغَبَةٍ ١٤ i

90:14

Or the giving of food in a day of privation (14)

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْمَرْحَمَةِ ١٧ i

90:17

Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. (17)

وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِآيَاتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ ١٩ i

90:19

But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand. (19)
