Surah Ash-Shams (The Sun) سُورَة الشمس

Surah Ash-Shams is the 91st chapter of the Quran, consisting of 15 verses. It emphasizes the contrast between light and darkness, both literally and symbolically, urging humans to purify their souls. Below are the verses of this Surah.

Surah Ash-Shams (The Sun) — سُورَةُ الشمس

Also known as: Wa-al-Shamsi Wa-Ḍuḥāhā (By the Sun and its Brightness)

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ ۞

i

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَاهَا ٨ i

91:8

And its enlightenment as to its wrong and its right;- (8)

كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَاهَا ١١ i

91:11

The Thamud (people) rejected (their prophet) through their inordinate wrong-doing, (11)

إِذِ انْبَعَثَ أَشْقَاهَا ١٢ i

91:12

Behold, the most wicked man among them was deputed (for impiety). (12)

فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ نَاقَةَ اللَّهِ وَسُقْيَاهَا ١٣ i

91:13

But the Messenger of Allah said to them: "It is a She-camel of Allah! And (bar her not from) having her drink!" (13)

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُمْ بِذَنْبِهِمْ فَسَوَّاهَا ١٤ i

91:14

Then they rejected him (as a false prophet), and they hamstrung her. So their Lord, on account of their crime, obliterated their traces and made them equal (in destruction, high and low)! (14)
